A Ball Tracking Technique for Augmented Reality Applications

Journal Title: Romanian Journal of Human - Computer Interaction - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

This article presents a robust tracking technique based on colored balls and with a reduced need for computing resources. The technique is based on a random Hough transform algorithm which is optimized for use in real-time applications such as augmented reality systems. Requiring only a conventional color camera attached to a regular PC, this approach allows to determine the 3D position of balls based on interactive processing frameworks. The algorithm is fast enough to be easily combined with other real-time tracking engines. Unlike tracking techniques based on recognition of planar markers, this technique provides robustness to partial occlusion, which interact with real objects.
