Abstract
Blade-palatal initials zh[ʈʂ], ch[ʈʂh], sh[ʂ], and r[ʐ] are important characteristics in Standard Chinese (Putonghua) pronunciation, which are also some difficult parts for non-Chinese speakers. This paper is intended to analyze the appearance and condition of the blade-palatal-initial pronunciation of learners in Medan, Indonesia, in which the learners are divided into two groups, Chinese Indonesians and locals. It also describes the brief differences between Standard Mandarin and Southern Min initials and between Standard Mandarin initials and Indonesian consonants. To achieve the objective, the research was conducted by using descriptive-qualitative design. Because there are no blade-palatal sounds either in Indonesian or in Southern Min, it is very common for Chinese descendants in Medan who speak Putonghua to always omit the blade-palatal parts, e.g.: “to eat” that should be pronounced as [ʈʂhʅ55] to always be pronounced as [ʦhəʔ], which is not correct and might lead to another meaning. As well as locals who speak Indonesian to always replace the blade-palatal sounds with the consonants which sound near to them: [ʦə], [ʦhə], [sə],[rə].

Abstract
This research was aimed at describing the extent to which the
grade 10,11, and 12 students acquire the paragraph development
of exposition paragraph writing and to describe the process of
acquiring the paragraph development. The development of
exposition paragraph was analyzed by following the theory of
Knapp & Watkins (2009:152) that consists of text structure and
lexico-grammar. The text structure is used to see the logical flow
of ideas from the beginning until the end of the paragraph, while
the lexico-grammar refers to the wordings to form meaning. To
achieve the objectives of this study, this research was conducted
by using descriptive qualitative design which relied on words to
describe the phenomena. The data was analyzed following Miles
et.al’ s model. The research finding showed that first, the students
from grade 10,11, and 12 had not acquired the development of
exposition paragraph writing since they only put thesis statement,
argument, but there was no conclusion. Second, the development
of exposition paragraph could not be explained since the subjects
did not relate the thesis statement to the argument and they did
not provide conclusion. However, the development can be seen
through the greater use of lexico-grammar from grade 10, 11 until
12.

transitivity systems used in various spoken discourses and the
reasons of using them. This research applied descriptive qualitative
design which relies on words to describe the phenomena. The
documentation technique was used to achieve the aim of the study.

the speech were 139 processes; dominantly was material process

dominantly were 44 (57, 8%) material process; while there were 42
processes in the song; dominantly was 25 (59, 6%) material process.
There were 6 reasons of using types of processes in different spoken
discourses: 1) physical actions, 2) thinking actions, 3) identifying
