Depth Perception Evaluation of 3D Virtual Prototypes Using Imersive CAVE Systems

Journal Title: Romanian Journal of Human - Computer Interaction - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

In this paper an experimental study that aimed depth perception of virtual prototypes in an immersive environment compared with the depth perception of virtual prototypes using 2D LCD monitor is presented. The experiment carried out shows that perceived depth values estimated for virtual prototypes is significantly influenced by the stereoscopic visualization. Another interesting result of the study was that the estimated depth accuracy significantly increases with the depth size that has to be perceived. The results of conducted experimental study illustrate that the use of immersive stereoscopic visualization is useful during Computer Aided Design related activities.
