FOR A SUSTAINABLE TRADITION OF RESEARCH IN THE PERADENIYA FACULTY OF ARTS

Abstract
This paper traces the establishment and subsequent evolution of the University of Peradeniya, particularly in relation to its original mandate as the University of Ceylon. In this regard, it focuses on the most signifcant intellectual contributions of some of the university’s most illustrious alumni in the feld of Arts. The paper also explores in detail the impact of vernacularization of the medium of instruction on the quality of education imparted by the institution, its academic independence, as well as its research output. It extensively deals with the politics of the repeated restructuring of the University in terms of both its causes and consequences, and fnally makes some prescriptions for a desirable and necessary future course of action.
