Rosmarinus officinalis (romero) es una especie que se distribuye en territorio mexicano. Es empleada como condimento, ornamental y de amplio uso medicinal. En la medicina tradicional es usada para infecciones vaginales, problemas cardiacos, cicatrización de heridas, en el manejo de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 y obesidad, como antiaterogénico, neuro y hepatoprotector. Esta especie biosintetiza compuestos como ácido betulínico, ácido rosmarínico, ácido carnósico, carnosol, rosmanol, ácido micromérico, ácido cafeico, ácido oleanólico y ácido ursólico, borneol, verbenona, α y β-amirina, fitol y diversos compuestos fenólicos como flavonoides (luteolina, genkwanina, campferol y otros), a los que se atribuye su actividad antioxidante, antiinflamatoria, anticancerígena y antimicrobiana. A pesar de ser muy empleada en la medicina tradicional con importante efecto antioxidante y antiinflamatorio, son pocos los trabajos que exploran su efecto hepatoprotector (HPP). El objetivo de esta revisión fue recopilar la evidencia científica disponible sobre el efecto protector de extractos de R. officinalis frente al daño inducido con diversos agentes hepatotóxicos en modelos in vivo. A la fecha, solo nueve artículos describen el efecto HPP de extractos polares contra el daño inducido con tetracloruro de carbono, tioacetamida, creosato, ciclofosfamida y acetato de plomo. --- Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) is distributed throughout the Mexican territory. It is used as a condiment, ornamental and for a wide medicinal use. In traditional medicine, it is used to treat digestive tract and respiratory tract ailments, vaginal infections, for heart problems, wound healing, against diabetes mellitus TII, obesity, antiatherogenic and neuroprotective, and to promote liver function and the production of bile. This species biosynthesizes several compounds such as betulinic acid, rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, carnosol, rosmanol, micomeric acid, caffeic acid, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid, borneol, verbenone, α and β-amirin, phytol and various phenolic compounds such as flavonoids (luteolin, genkwanina, campferol and others), which show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antimicrobial activities. Despite being widely used in traditional medicine with an important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, few studies have explored its hepatoprotective (HPP) effect. The objective of this review was to collect the existing information on the HPP effect of R. officinalis extracts against damage induced with some hepatotoxic agents. Nowadays, only nine papers describe the HPP effect of R. officinalis (polar extracts) against damage induced with carbon tetrachloride, thioacetamide, creosate, cyclophosphamide, azatriophine and lead acetate.
