Determining Contribution of Personality Characteristics in Posttraumatic Growth in Patients with Cancer

Abstract

Background: Although cancer may have negative psychological sequel, it may also be experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). The present study was aimed at identifying the roles of personality characteristics for predicting PTG in cancer patients.Method: The NEO-FFI and PTG was administered to 95 cancer patients in Tehran, the capital city, and Zanjan, in western IRAN. The internal criteria is the age of patient has been between 14 to 72 years and with at least 6 months after their final chemotherapy. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression. analysis were conducted using the SPSS 15.0. Result: Finding that appears relatively consistent is that PTG is positively related to conscientiousness and extraversion. On the other hands, PTG is negatively associated with Neuroticism. Conclusion: Further research is required, to clarify the development of PTG, also, to extend the posttraumatic growth studies in health context, encompassing the patient as well as social network and family.
