A study of clinico-haematological profile of iron deficiency anaemia at AIMSR, Chittoor
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Anemia, defined as blood hemoglobin level below established cut-off points, is a pervasive global public health problem. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common micronutrient disorder in the world, negatively affecting the health and socio-economic wellbeing of millions of men, women, and children. It results in impaired cognitive and motor development in children and decreased work capacity in adults. Aim and objectives: To study clinical and haematological profile of iron deficiency anaemia. Material and methods: It’s a hospital based, retrospective, cross sectional study conducted at a tertiary care centre between January 2015 to December 2015 for a period of one year including almost 200 patients with 120 patients having Iron deficiency anaemia. Data was collected from the records about patient’s detailed history and investigations that were performed. After defining adequate diagnostic criterias patients were classified and data was analysed. Results: Out of 200 patients admitted in medicine ward, 120 (60%) patients were having iron deficiency anaemia. The young (15-30 years) and middle (31-45 years) age groups were more susceptible while, the females (55.84%) compared to males (44.16%) suffered more from iron deficiency anaemia. Pallor (66.67%) was the commonest sympom encountered in IDA. Conclusions: Anemia is a global public health problem with serious consequences for human and socioeconomic health and development. Appropriate screening and subsequent diagnostic testing will allow most cases of anemia to be diagnosed at the earliest.
