ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF A SCREENNOVEL

Abstract

The article contains the results of the research on investigaiting the differences of film looking aspect in genre variants of a novel. It analyses the first examples of a screennovel in the literatures of the Western Europe and Ukrainian literature, which arrange the typology of the adventure-suspense genre. It states that one of the first movie novels is «Dongoo-Tonka or Science Wonders», written by French author Jules Romain in 1919, which was translated into Russian and published in 1926. M. Borisov, who worked for the Odessa film studio, touched on the same genre variant of the novel. He wrote the novels «Ukraziya», «Revolver’s time to speak», «Mr.Droid’s Thursdays», «Kvint» during the period of the 20–30-s of the XXth century. The article deals with the comparative analyses on the screennovels «Kvint» (by M. Borisov) and «Dongoo-Tonka…» (by J. Romain). It considers the range of artistic devices, which is expanded by quiddity, allusions and visual imagery. It is important to speak about some adventure-suspense devices, such as: forms of dual roles and repeated intrigues, emphatic features, mysterious details, changes in characters’ appearance, the complication of the novel’s structure by adding insert stories, texts, which decode graphic pictures and their correlation with the title of the novel, that points on the fragmentarity of the novel’s structure, its film looking aspect as the text is a kind of range of frame-shots. Such effect is also possible because the authors use including to the texts posters, decreets, announcements, newspapers’ advertisements, telegrams and so on. Moreover, the research focuses on the attempts of both authors to express the psychology of the main characters by literary (M. Borisov) and cinematic (J. Romain) devices. Modern interpretation of these texts states their double contents, demonstrates ironicalness of the statement, parodical style, that means that the novels have the features of social satire. At the same time the novel by J. Romain resembles a film script while the text by M. Borisov resembles a movie-essay. The conclusion is that the analysed texts influenced a lot the development of screen prose during the XXth century.
