An Exaggerated Response of Horses to Tick Infestation in South Eastern Nigeria: Pictures of Skin Reactions

Journal Title: Journal of Veterinary Advances - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 11

Abstract

An unusual reaction of 2 horses to repeated tick infestation was observed in South Eastern Nigeria. Infestations led to alopecia, bruises, dry crusty patches and nodules. Lesions cleared in the earlier infestations following treatment. In latter infestations lesions became more pronounced and did not clear off following treatment perhaps due to great immunity developed following previous infections. Skin scrapings revealed no mites or fungi on examination. It was concluded that ticks were either the major aetiology or they seriously predisposed the horses to the clinical condition displayed. Grazing fields should be cut low and grounds free of ticks should be used, careful and prompt tick removal and treatments should be practised.
