An Extraordinary Case of Isolated Cecal Necrosis

Journal Title: GENEL TIP DERGISI - Year 2018, Vol 28, Issue 4

Abstract

Although isolated cecal necrosis is generally seen in elderly patients, it is a very rare condition in adolscent patients and coexists with such systemic diseases as chronic heart disease, systemic infections, opportunistic fungal infections, hypovolemic shock, rheumatoid fever, and chronic renal failure. A 36-year-old female patient, who had no known history of disease or previous surgical procedures, presented with complaints of pain in the lower right quadrant, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite for the last two days. Acute appendicitis surgery was planned for the patient in the light of physical examination and laboratory results. Isolated cecal necrosis was seen intraoperatively, thus partial cecal resection in the ischemic area and primary repair were performed. Our case report reveals that isolated cecal necrosis should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of pain in the lower right quadrant in young patients with no comorbid conditions as well, although almost all the cases presented in literature are cases of elderly patients with comorbid conditions.
