Assessment of knowledge of the principles of provision of first aid among drivers

Abstract

[b][/b]introduction. Car accidents and resulting injuries are among the major causes of deaths. In Poland, there are four times as many fatal accidents as in other countries of the European Union. Very often, accidents are witnessed by other drivers, whose help may be crucial in saving the lives or health of the victims. objective. Analysis of the level of knowledge and attitudes concerning the provision of first aid among drivers. materials and method. The study was conducted between June – July 2012 in Kielce. It comprised 103 selected drivers with category B driver’s licence. The statistical evaluation of the results was made using Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, Gnu R software and selected tests from the Gretl statistical package. results. The majority of respondents described themselves as “amateur drivers” (67.96%). Considering the years of experience as a driver, the majority owned a driver’s licence for the period from 1–10 years (64.08%). The respondents’ mean age was 31.8 (SD ±11.32; age interval 20–61). conclusions. The study revealed significant shortcomings regarding the drivers’ knowledge concerning the provision of first aid, particularly managing the victims of car accidents.
