BADANIA ARCHEOLOGICZNE PROWADZONE PRZEZ MUZEUM ŻUP KRAKOWSKICH W  ROKU 2016

Journal Title: Studia i materiały do dziejów żup solnych w Polsce - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 32

Abstract

In the period between May and November 2016, the Archaeological Department was engaged in conducting excavations in Wieliczka, at dig site no. 112. These excavations constituted a continuation of work conducted by the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka since 2004, with a pause during the 2014-2015 seasons. Outside of Wieliczka, the 2016 season saw exploration of sites Zakrzów no. 8 in the Niepołomice municipality, and Bochnia-Chodenice no. 43 in the Bochnia municipality. The dig site no. 112 is located on a gentle slope, facing northward towards the Wieliczka Valley and the oxbow lake of river Serafa (Srawa). Presently, the confirmed area of artefact finds is confined by the streets Janińska, Jasna, Krótka, and Stroma. This site was first identified towards the end of the 1990s by the surveyors of the archaeological department of the Museum. It happened during a routine inspection of earthworks performed as part of construction of a private house. It was then that fragments of pottery were found. The material of the finds was analysed and identified as fragments of saltworks goblets – vessels used in salt production during the bronze and early iron ages. The archaeological studies on the site were initiated in 2004, when the first surveying excavations were conducted. Between 2004-2013, the excavation work covered a significant part of the available area, with a focus on the area near the forking of the streets Janińska and Jasna. Most of the work was conducted on plots 112 and 324 – both virtually free from structures and covered by orchards. Several excavations were initiated there, resulting in unearthing of numerous prehistoric artefacts dated from the Neolithic and up to the modern period.
