Abstract

The work presents results of studies on N, P, K and Mg content in the thalli of arboreal lichens. Samples for the study were collected in autumn 2013 from deciduous trees located in the town of Słupsk. Research sites included residential housing areas, green parks, neighbourhoods of busy streets and industrial plants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the pollution of urban environment of Słupsk with selected macronutrients using the thalli of three species of lichens: Hypogymnia physodes, Parmelia sulcata and Xanthoria parietina. N content in lichens was determined by Kjeldahl method, phosphorus by spectrophotometric method, and K and Mg by atomic absorption spectrometry. The most sensitive species turned out to be H. physodes, the presence of which was found only in 10 of the examined sites. The other two species, P. sulcata and X. parietina, were slightly less sensitive to pollution, their presence was confirmed in 19 and 18 research sites, respectively. Among the lichen species studied, X. parietina was characterized by the highest content of N, K and Mg, which confirms the preference of this species to occur in nitrophilous and well-dusted habitats. P. sulcata thalli collected the largest amount of phosphorus. The mean N: P ratio was 5.9 in H. physodes, 6.7 in P. sulcata and 7.6 in X. parietina and it did not show any statistically significant differences between the species. The relations between the elements in the thalli of the studied lichens lay in the following descending sequence: N> K> P> Mg.
