BURDEN ON CAREGIVER OF PSYCHIATRIC IN-PATIENTS.

Abstract

Background: Despite the increased demands on family members to provide care for psychiatry patients, little is known about the level of burden among these family caregivers. Objective: To examine the level of perceived burden on Caregiver of psychiatry InPatients and to test its associations with their demographic characteristics, social and family factors. Setting: The study was conducted at Dept of Psychiatry, Mental Health Institute SeB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack Methods: A survey of patients admitted at Mental Health Institute was conducted for two weeks, using a questionnaire designed for this purpose. Results: In our study, it was observed that Subjective Burden being positively associated with in younger age group, female, Nuclear family, Years of education and negatively correlated with marital and employment status. Objective Burden was found to be more in nuclear family. Demand Burden was found to be significantly less regardless of duration of illness, Where as Total Burden was found to be significantly more in nuclear family, uneducated, employed and if duration of illness is more than six months
