Care of elderly– current opportunities in Szczecin and demand in 2025

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4

Abstract

The 21st century is called the ‘age of aging populations’. Aging is a natural stage of human life, but this does not exempt a government from the obligation to provide adequate care for citizens. This is the reason why analysis of the resources of these services, both quantitative and qualitative, is so important. The aim of this study is to determine the availability of care services for older people in Szczecin and the demand for these services in 2025.The study involved 19 care centres for the elderly in Szczecin. Analysis of population in Szczecin included data provided by the Central Statistical Office in that city. The chosen research method was a diagnostic opinion poll using a survey technique combined with an interview with representatives of the institutions. Prediction of the population for 2025 was made by calculating the probability of 15-year survival by people at a certain age.In Szczecin, the age factor is 22%. The factor of the economic burden by the elderly in 2010 was 28%, and in 2025 is expected to be 44%. Representatives of the institutions assessed the access to services in Szczecin usually as bad (40%) or moderate (30%). Most indicated barriers to accessing these services as being the small number of places in institutions, the high cost to customers, the small number of institutions. Conclusions: 1. The phenomenon of demographic transition and population aging also relates to the city of Szczecin. 2. In the area of Szczecin, care services for older people are provided mainly by social welfare and health care and the private sector. 3. The services in Szczecin should be expanded.Key wordsHealth Services for the Aged, Social Welfare, Demography
