Cehegín en 1725
Journal Title: Alquipir - Year 2022, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
The town of Cehegín was under the jurisdiction of the Order of Santiago since the Kingdom of Murcia was reconquered in the XIII century, and in 1725, the year in which the cult of the Virgin of “las Maravillas” was introduced in the town, it was still part of the encomienda that included Caravaca, Cehegín and Bullas. Since the time of the Catholic Monarchs, the towns were in the power of the crown, which used them to reward services rendered. But the encomendadores were losing powers and interest in the lands until, after a large part of them had been sold to individuals, in 1854 the encomienda was abolished.
