Changes in the subjective sensation of pain in patients with cervical spine dysfunction treated by means of Saunders traction and TENS

Journal Title: Fizjoterapia Polska - Year 2010, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Neck pain is one of the most common causes of reduced overall well-being. The aim of this thesis is to present changes in the sensation of neck pain following a traction and TENS treatment. Materials and methods. The subjects of this study were 45 patients aged 21-66 years suffering from neck pain. They were treated using the Saunders traction device and TENS. The treatment was performed in three experimental groups. Saunders traction was used in the first group, TENS in the second group and the last group received a combination of both these treatments. Results. The patients’ subjective assessment of pain intensity in the Laitinen scale showed a reduction of pain in all groups characterized by a decrease of pain intensity from moderate to mild. The most pronounced therapeutic effect was achieved in the group which received a combination of traction and TENS. Conclusions. The Saunders traction device combined with TENS produced the most marked and lasting decrease in pain arising from the cervical spine. The greatest improvement was observed after the first session. Improved well-being was also noticed at the end of the treatment.
