Competition between plants from adjacent plots in field trial with winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). 1. Effects of plant competition and variability of soil fertility inside the block

Abstract

Precision of the seed yield estimation decreases with increasing number of objects in the field trial. But for breeding purposes it is necessary to evaluate many new strains. Papadakis in 1937 suggested the possibility of eliminating the soil variability inside blocks using regression between the yields of the nearest neighbour plots. Regression coefficients between seed yields from neighbouring plots should be a positive value in this case.Presented work was based on the results of the 21 field trials in which four sets of 25 winter rapeseed objects were studied. Two sets were investigated in six, one in five and one in four localities. Field trials were grown in 2009/2010 and sown in complete randomized block design with four replications.Variability resulting from differences between localities and between blocks was eliminated before analyses of regression. Then the average seed yield of two nearest adjacent plots was calculated for each plot. Two sets of 552 pairs of values and one set of 460 pairs of values and one set of 368 pairs of values were obtained. These pairs represented seed yields from the plots (y’) and average seed yields from the two nearest neighbouring plots (x). These data were used to calculate the linear regression and the slopes of the regression line in relation to the X axis. Significance of the regression coefficients was checked using analyses of variance. The obtained results showed that the regressions between the yield of the plot and the average yield from adjacent plots were highly significant for all experiments. Just in one experiment the regression coefficient had a positive value. The obtained results showed that we were dealing with two phenomena: the variance of soil fertility inside a block and the competition between plants from the neighbouring plots. The regression is negative in the case of the superiority of the competition factor. The smallest influence of competition we have found in a situation where in the experiment were involved the least differentiated F1 hybrids from one breeding program, and the strongest effects of competition in the experiment in which were evaluated strains from three different breeding programs. The effects of competition of the winter rape affect mainly the yield of extreme row of plants (Krzymański 1985). To eliminate the effect of competition on the seed yield, it is necessary to harvest only middle rows of the plot and discard the edge rows.
