Complete Heart Block In H1N1 Infection

Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

H1N1 influenza infection commonly manifests as bilateral bronchopneumonia. Myocarditis of varying severity can also result from influenza. Fulminant myocarditis is a rare complication of viral myocarditis resulting from influenza infection. We report a case of fulminant myocarditis with complete heart block in an 19 year old girl presenting to the emergency with complaints of fever, sore throat and dyspnea since 3 days prior to admission. Initially managed on the lines of bronchopneumonia, she developed severe bradycardia with electrocardiogram revealing complete heart block within few hours of admission. A diagnosis of fulminant myocarditis with complete heart block was made with nasopharyngeal secretions positive for H1N1 virus. Patient succumbed to the illness despite a temporary pacemaker, antibiotics and all supportive measures.
