Dental implants in prosthetic dentistry: Evolution of implant dentistry

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 4

Abstract

Over the last twenty years implantology has become one of the most important pillars of prosthodontics. However, the development of this treatment method goes back much beyond the turn of the eighties and the nineties of the twenty century, when this method of treatment was introduced in our country. Since then the methodology of implant treatment has evolved in terms of both surgical techniques and prosthetic treatment with use of implants, as well as in materials from which the implants have been produced. These novel approaches usually result from conclusions drawn by researchers from their own empirical experience, and somewhat later, from the development of implantology and carefully conducted clinical trials. The purpose of this publication is to present a historical background, and the ideas guiding the creators of modern implantology, as well as to discuss in brief the characteristics of implants currently used in dentistry derived directly from the experience gained in the course of the evolution of the described method of treatment.
