Evaluation of abdominal and general obesity in postmenopausal women with good and poor sleep quality: a case-control study

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 6

Abstract

Background: good sleep quality is an important factor for quality of life and wellbeing. Obesity could be associated with poor sleep quality. we aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and different measures of obesity (general obesity, abdominal obesity) in postmenopausal women. Methods: In this case-control study, we selected 200 postmenopausal women, aged 50-60, from several health centers of Tehran. Self-reported information on socio-demographic characteristics was completed for all participants. The data regarding the sleep quality was collected by using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements including weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences were obtained from all subjects. The chi-square test was utilized to compare the qualitative variables. Independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the quantitative variables between the case and control groups. Univariate logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between the independent variables and poor sleep quality. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 16; Chicago, IL). Results: Poor sleepers had significantly lower educational level (p<0.05), with significant more housekeeper women among them, comparing to good sleepers (p<0.05) (Table 1). In addition, the poor sleepers had a little higher weight (73.20 ± 11.58 versus 71.84 ± 11.28), WC (96.88 ± 9.11 versus 96.34 ± 10.78), hip circumferences (111.06 ± 9.73 versus 109.80 ± 9.57) and BMI values (30.20 ± 4.58 versus 30.05 ± 4.61) in comparison with good sleepers but anthropometric measures did not differ significantly between the two groups. The odds ratio (OR) of poor sleep quality in women with an associate's degree and in employed and retired women was 0.22 (CI 95%: 0.06-0.78) and 0.24 (CI 95%: 0.12-0.49) respectively. Conclusions: In the present study, we didn’t find any significant differences in anthropometric measures between poor and good sleepers. This is due to the fact that our participants were in postmenopausal stage with a high risk of weight gain.
