Evaluation of oral health behaviour of disabled children – questionnaire investigation of parents

Abstract

Introduction: Children with mental or physical disabilities rely on help of other people, so their dental state will correlate with knowledge and awareness of dental needs of their parents. Aim of the study: To evaluate the oral health behaviour of disabled children from Łódź based on a questionnaire investigation of their parents or carers. Materials and methods: The questionnaire investigation involved parents or carers of 223 disabled individuals aged between 5 and 21 years. The uestionnaire mainly concerned methods of caries prophylaxis, frequency and availability of dental visits, hygienic and dietary habits. Results: Difficulties in making dental appointments were reported by 2/3 (59.5%) of the studied population. Only one in ten children (10.3%) was referred by a pediatrician to a dentist. 18 (8%) of children had their irstvisitundertheageof3,106 (47.5%) between 4-6 years of age, and 58 (28%) at school age. 89 (39.9%) of parents found it impossible to answer how often their disabled children go to see a dentist. Conclusion: Hygienic and dietary habits of disabled children are not satisfactory.
