EVALUATION OF PERCEPTUAL ILLUSIONS IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 51

Abstract

The evaluation of the visual quality that an individual makes for a space depends on the individual's visual characteristics as well as on the characteristics of the individual. For this reason, the qualities of the elements that make up the space are directly related to how the space is perceived and how it will exert an influence in humans. Therefore, the perceptual clues that are settled in the periphery; They play an important role in defining the characteristic of the place and its influence on people. This characteristic is determined by the spatial design elements in the landscape and their impact on people. In the scope of the study, it is suggested to use perceptual illusions in bringing spatial design elements together effectively. These illusions that can be used in design are classified as objective illusions (geometric illusions) and subjective illusions, and it is suggested that inferences made from perceptual illusions can be used by designers. The designer can determine the criteria obtained from these inferences; • Be able to carry perceptual clues about the depth and width properties of the space at the beginning of a new design, and • It can be used to analyze and improve the depth and breadth of existing landscape designs in line with these principles. In this context, the results of the study are thought to be the answer to the question of how to design more valuable landscapes using the features (spatial, color, texture, shape and line / direction) of spatial design elements.
