Evaluation of Sealing Ability of Selected Dental Cements Used for Orthograde Filling of Roots in Resected Teeth

Journal Title: Dental and Medical Problems - Year 2010, Vol 47, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. The final success of apicoectomy depends on many factors. One of them is complete sealing of the root canal, which can be obtained by preparing and filling of the canal with the proper material. The aim of such a tight filling is to avoid pathological bacteria, which can develop in an apicoectomy site. Objectives. The aim of the study is to analyze the tightness of selected dental cements used for filling of canals in resected teeth. The method of preparing and final orthograde filling should make the retrograde root filling not necessary. Material and Methods. In the current study, the sealing ability of the material in the root canal in resected teeth was evaluated in the metallographic microscope. The materials used were as follows: phosphate cements with hydroksyapatite Agatos HA® (Chema-Rzeszów), phosphate cements Hoffman’s® (Hoffman’s Dental) and glassionomer cement Ketac-Cem® (3M ESPE). Sixty-one apices which were removed during apicoectomy operation, were analyzed. The root canals were prepared and filled in the orthograde manner, one hour before an operation. Results. The gaps in the fillings of root canals, on the resection level, appeared in 10% of all cases. In both groups of phosphate cements, there were single gaps. In the group of glassionomer cement, there were gaps in four cases. Conclusions. Phosphate cements used in the study are proper to seal the filling of root canals in resected teeth. The ideal material which will allow the root canal of a resected tooth to be sealed and at the same time promote healing of the surrounding bone is still being looked for.
