Explaining practitioners' views on the relationship between religion/spirituality and health

Abstract

Regardless of wide medical sources on spirituality and medicine, little research conducted on practitioners’ beliefs about the effect of religion on health. Materials and methods: 21 practitioners on the commonalities among religion/ spirituality and medicine, participated in current research based on semi-structured interviews. These interviews were transcribed, encoded and text quality was iteratively analyzed. Results: All participants supposed that religion would influence on health, but they did not highlight on religious impact on the findings. Instead, they emphasized on the ways in which religion helps a model for knowing and decision-makings linked to the disease and the society in which they practiced the disease. Religion explained practical as it allows patients to cope or adapt with the disease, but when it leads to psychological disagreement or is in conflict with medical suggestions, it would be detrimental.Conclusion: The physicians' views and patients' religious approaches may have been little influenced by the confirmation for "the association between faith and health.
