Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Haemangiopericytoma is mesenchymal tumor originating from perivascular cells, fist described in 1942 by Stout and Murrey. It may occure in any part of the body where blood vessels are. The etiology is unknown. An origin within the lateral nasal wall is less common. Haemangiopericytomas may have a course of both benign and malignant, with the location of the nose and sinuses is characterized by reduce malignancy. Wide surgical excision is the treatment of choice with adjuvant radiotherapy. Aim: A case of haemangiopericytoma of the nasal cavity side wall in 61-yearold female, admitted to the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology of Szczecin Madical Univeristy, with monolateral nasal respiratory obstruction and epistaxis is reported. Authors have described preoperative diagnostic problems and combined surgical treatment supplemented by radiotherapy. Material and methods: The patient has done CT scans, pre- and postoperative histopathological and histochemical studies. It has been planned follow-up radiotherapy. Results: After post-operative 5 months observation there is no clinical features of reccurens. The patient will follow-up less than 5 years. Conclusions: The diagnosis of haemangiopericytma is established based on the histological examination supplemented by immunohistochemical studies. Radiological imaging using CT scans and MRI method is useful to evaluate tumor size, its exact location, infitration and eventually bones destruction. In large-size tumors angiography and preoperative embolisation is indicated. The lack of clear standards evaluate neoplasm as a benign or malignant and number of local recurrence in head and neck’s region about 60% and metastases 5–10% couse all HPC malignant and consider adjuvant radiotherapy.
