Inflammation of the choroid plexus and meninges, LCM (Lymphocytic choriomeningitis)

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

LCM virus belongs to the family Arenaviridae and occurs worldwide. Its reservoirs are small rodents such as mice, rats, hamsters. Humans become infected mainly by inhalation – and therefore the most effective – through dust which contains viruses excreted by apparently healthy, small rodents, or ingestion – eating food contaminated with rodent excreta. The virus penetrates through the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract and enters the blood, then penetrates through to the brain and other organs. LCM virus infection can lead to inflammation of the choroid plexus and meninges. Infections occur in almost all countries, mostly in the temperate climate, often in spring and autumn. Infection may occur without signs of meninges and brain failure, giving a flu ‑like syndrome. The article presents basic information about the recognition and threats caused by infection with the LCM virus.Key words: LCM virus, human health
