Influence of selected dietary components on women’s health at natural menopause

Abstract
[b][/b][b]Introduction.[/b] One of the stages in a woman’s life is menopause, characterized by the absence of menstrual cycles as a result of the cessation of ovarian function responsible for ovulation, and hormonal changes. Ovarian hypofunction and occurring involution processes affect women’s well-being, quality of life and health at menopause.[b]Objective.[/b] The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of selected dietary components on the complaints and diseases characteristic of women at the natural menopause.Description of the state of knowledge. Today, hormone replacement therapy is commonly used to treat the symptoms of menopause. The growing number of women, additionally to hormone replacement therapy, use complementary and alternative medicine, which may include herbs, meditation, dietary supplements, soya and soya-based products, acupuncture, massages, etc. This study constitutes a review of the most prominent scientific reports on the influence of selected dietary components on women’s health at natural menopause.[b]Summing up. [/b]The unpleasant symptoms occurring at menopause, and also the ways to prevent them, have become the problem frequently investigated in scientific studies. It seems that it is possible to limit their incidence and inconvenience considerably by following a balanced diet providing all necessary nutrients, or possible supplementation in accordance with a doctor’s instructions.[b]Key words:[/b] menopause, phytoestrogens, vitamin D, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids
