Knowledge of secondary school students about type 2 diabetes risk factors

Abstract

Background: Nowadays, type 2 diabetes is a serious health problem. There are many factors which increase the risk of diabetes, and the only effective way to limit their influence on the development of the disease is properly selected prophylactics. Primary prevention provides the possibility to reduce the negative influence of type 2 diabetes on the human organism, and makes it possible to identify groups with increased risk of the disease which, together with subsequent laboratory tests, makes it possible to reduce the incidence of the latent form of the disease. Primary prevention should include health education among young social groups (including secondary school students). Preventive measures should be based on a thorough analysis of adolescents› knowledge about type 2 diabetes risk factors. the objective of the study was to identify the scope of knowledge of secondary school students on type 2 diabetes risk factors. the material and the method: The survey was carried out in January 2012 among students of a Secondary School Complex in Stalowa Wola. The research material was collected with the use of a questionnaire prepared by the authors, including 23 closed questions, among which 15 constituted a test of the knowledge about type 2 diabetes and its risk factors. results: The survey carried out showed that over 70% of respondents presented a low level of knowledge concerning type 2 diabetes risk factors. Third-grade students had a higher degree of knowledge than their younger schoolmates. Conclusions: Analysis of the factors of the results of the survey enabled formulation of the following conclusions: secondary school students have a varied level of knowledge about modifiable risk factors of type 2 diabetes, while knowledge of non-modifiable factors among the respondents is insufficient.Key words: knowledge, youth, type 2 diabetes
