Late recurrence of breast carcinoma as an isolated metastasis to the parotis. Prognostic factors

Abstract
Parotid gland metastases from distant malignant tumors are uncommon (0.16– 4%). The distinction between primary and meta static tumors in salivary gland is of specia l importance for therapy and prognosis. For the treatment of this metastasis, parotidectomy, radiation, chemo therapy, and hormone therapy were performe d. The authors presented the case of distant metastasis to the parotid gland; a 59-year-old woman with breast cancer and metastases to the pa rotid gland 12 years after surgery. Beca use immunoh istochemical ana lysis in our case had revealed the tumor to be positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors we continued to administer postoperatively horm onotherapy. The prognosis of pa tients presenting with meta static deposits in parotid gland from a distant primary tu mor is usually poor. The long-term prognosis is infl uenced by the histological type, location, and staging of the primary tumo r type and steroid receptors – positive and HER2 overexpress ion. Adjuvant hormonot herapy is an effective treatment, which prolo ngs sur vival in women with hormone receptor-p ositive breast cancer.
