Los motivos figurados en la musivaria doméstica de Carthago Nova
Journal Title: Alquipir - Year 2023, Vol 18, Issue 1
Abstract
Tessellated pavements have generally been common elements in the Roman urban dwellings, especially in those belonging to individuals with a notable economic and social level. Not surprisingly, these pavements not only had an ornamental purpose, but also helped to highlight the power and importance of their owners, so it was common to find them in noble and representative spaces intended to be seen by visitors. In the same way, it is conceivable that the more intricate and elaborate the design of a mosaic, the more appreciation and compliments it would receive from the guests, which is why, with the passage of time, they were counting more and more on a greater number of decorative elements and, of course, with motifs and figurative representations. Of course, within the Roman world, the Hispanic provinces are no exception to this rule, confirming the presence of mosaics with figurative motifs in numerous urban domestic spaces, with those located in the southeast of the peninsula being our object of study and analysis.
