Manubiae, Praedae i Spolia – określenia rzymskiej zdobyczy wojennej
Journal Title: Studia Europaea Gnesnensia - Year 2016, Vol 14, Issue
Abstract
The article “Manubiae, praedae et spolia: notions of the Roman spoils of war” sets out to discuss the most important issues associated with Roman plunder. The first part of the paper presents antique definitions of major terms referring to particular categories of spoils. Subsequently, the author focuses on the most important modern observations and findings regarding spoils of war and their distribution. The final part is devoted to analyses of individual theses and critique of the views presented by J. Bradford-Churchill, according to whom the leaders were not entitled to the spoils of war in their possession. The author of this paper argues that the leaders could freely allocate the spoils of war to which the source refer by the technical term of manubiae.
