Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 4

Abstract

Nowadays, the mass-media constitute an integral part of human everyday life, and therefore are an important source of information concerning health. The objective of the study was an evaluation of the effect of mass-media on the obtain- ing and maintenance of wellbeing, and analysis of the frequency of using health information. The relationships were also analyzed between age, place of residence and education level, and the frequency of using the mass-media for information pertaining to health. The study was conducted in the Sub-Carpathian Region, and covered a group of 300 respondents. The respondents were selected by means of purposive sampling, with consideration of age. The following three age groups were examined: Group I – aged 15-19, Group II – 20-25, and Group III – 26-35. The study, carried out in the form of a diagnostic survey, and the research instrument applied, was a self-designed non-standardized questionnaire form. The questions were biased towards the evaluation of obtaining information concerning health from the mass-media.The results of the study showed that at present the media are among the main sources of acquisition of health knowledge. The frequency of obtaining information concerning health from the media is correlated with age and education level; how- ever, it does not depend on place of residence. The respondents most frequently used prophylactic programs developed by physicians, nurses and dietitians (47.2%).
