MATCH-MAKING IN SLAVIC PHRASEOLOGY

Abstract

The Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian phraseological units which explicate match-making conceptosphere are analyzed in this article. Match-making is considered as an important element of wedding ceremonial which concerns changing of the social status of a person and reflected in the Slavic language picture of the world by means of phraseological units. The ancient Slavic ceremonies and traditions of matchmaking are analyzed, and their place in the contemporary language culture is determined. The active and dominating role of a fiancé and members of his family during all periods of wedding agreement is emphasized. The Slavic culture concepts such as «gate», «pumpkin», «trough», as well as national and cultural ones as «rushnik», «obushta» (literally «boots and shoes») based on phraseological units of the three Slavic languages are determined and analyzed. The author comes to a conclusion about the broad match-making conceptosphere representation in the Slavic phraseology. The important role of marriage and family in the world outlook of the ancient Slavs and Slavic cultural tradition is emphasized.
