METHODS OF EXPRESSION OF THE PERCEPTION OF EVENT BY ITS PARTICIPANTS IN STORY BY ALEXANDR GRIN «ISLAND RENAULT»

Abstract

This article is devoted to the investigation of subjective modality of Alexander Grin’s story «Island Renault». Main ways of expression of hero’s point of view on the events and external world were distinguished and studied. The aim of the article is to determine the nature of author’s conception of reality, embodied in the story of A.S. Grin. Attention was focused on the role of semantic opposition «own – alien» and also on the external and internal speech – it’s functions in creation of picture of emotional state of personages and in expressing of their understanding of reality and themselves. The importance of internal speech in the story was underlined by Green, who included a part of «old Hindu legend» to his story as it’s epigraph: «Listen only that voice, which talks without a sound». Internal speech expresses the dialectics of hero’s soul. There are several parts in the story. The center of first part is emotional state of lieutenant on the military ship. He worries in connection with the loss of sailor that remained on an island. The reader understands that he is not cruel man. The analysis of subjective modality helps to see that main problems in the story have universe (common to all mankind and philosophical) but not social character. The second part of the story named «What the forest talks» is devoted to the expression of hero’s way of understanding the nature’s voice. The picture of the word in this part of the story demonstrates the connection of «Island Renault» with artistic works of impressionists: in usual a hero sees unexpected and unknown; all world is a great miracle for him. The hero of the story makes a choice between his old «dark» life and returning to nature. At first nature causes in his soul fear and thoughts about death, but later he feels the joy of harmony with the island. But this harmony has brief character and ends with his death. The center of the third part of the story – the clash of Tart and sailors who carry out the commander’s orders and try to return him to the ship. Modus plan of this part is connected with the expression of the understanding of the events by the sailors and Tart. The study of subjective modality helps to understand the author’s idea about the tragedy of human existence: people are in conflict with society because there is no freedom and poetry in it, on the one hand, but they can not live outside of society, on the other. The development of binary opposition «own – alien», as well as the reconstruction of external and internal speech of personages gives the reader the opportunity to understand author’s conception, which concludes in the idea of total trouble existence of people.
