Modelling assessment of groundwater recharge and drainage in Vistula River valley
Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2008, Vol 431, Issue 431
Abstract
The Vistula River valley forms a hydrogeological system recharged by the infiltration of precipitation as well as lateral inflow from the surrounding hydrogeological units. Infiltration recharge of the aquifer in the Vistula River valley is one of the main dynamic factors influencing groundwater circulation, water balance and groundwater vulnerability to contamination. Evaluation of groundwater recharge and drainage has been carried out in the vicinity of the Kampinos National Park (KNP) and Włocławek with the application of numerical modelling, what allowed determining the intensity of these processes in selected sub-regions, obtaining mean values characterizing the entire area, as well as making balance calculations. The results of modelling indicate that infiltration recharge may vary between particular parts of the water circulation system in the Vistula River valley. The value of infiltration recharge differs mainly in the particular hydrozones in the KNP area, and reaches 74.0–160.9 mm/y in dune belts, 10.5–43.9 mm/yr in swamp zones, and 56.1–94.5 mm/y in the Vistula River floodplain. The mean value of infiltration recharge for the entire KNP area attains 79 mm/y and is similar to the value of infiltration recharge from the Włocławek area, where it reaches just over 110 mm/y.

The use of the Monte Carlo method in modelling of contaminant migration to groundwater intakes
Prediction of contaminant inflow to groundwater intakes and water reservoirs is a very important problem from the practical point of view. Development of efficient modelling methods for such problems is still a subject o...
