Naming and Blessing of a Child in Pagan and Christian Traditions: Inheritance or Opposition
Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2016, Vol 82, Issue 1
Abstract
Marginalization of historical memory, which is observed today in the scientific and educational environment of our country makes it necessary to popularize historical and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people. In this context the revival and study of national traditions is vitally important, as far as they are the genetic code that reveals the essence of the Ukrainian soul. The problem of revival of Ukrainian ethnographic heritage has repeatedly become the object of scientific study, which clearly proves the outstanding Ukrainian ethnographers of XIX – XXI century. Among them, first of all, I would like to mention Sreznevsky, J. Holovatsky, I. Nechuy-Levitsky, N. Kostomarov, M. Maksimovic, O. Afanasyev-Chubinskogo Hilarion (King James Version) Hrushevskoho F. Wolf, and Frank V. Shukhevych Lozko G., M. Popovic, Kozholyatko G. and others. Note that with the exception of works by Lozko G., G. Kozholyatko, M. Popovic and others, almost all modern ethnological exploration focused primarily on solving the problem of multiculturalism of Ukrainian state. Considering the emphasized decline of interest in the study of material and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people in the modern domestic scientific discourse and prevalence in the modern domestic social outlook of the idea that only eastern Christianity determines the peculiarity of Ukrainian culture, it was appropriate to highlight ideological origins of one of the most common rites in life of Ukrainian people – baptism of the child. Moreover the research process showed that the most appropriate to the Christian sacrament of baptism pagan rite was the naming and blessing of a child. Along with others, the article emphasized the loss of historical memory and spiritual culture of the Ukrainian people.
