Participation and interaction of Ukraine and Moldova in post-Soviet space integration associations (on the example of CIS)

Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 4

Abstract

The article describes the Ukrainian-Moldovan relationship through the activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States as an example of the integration union of the post-Soviet space. Outlined are the motives for creation of the CIS for Ukraine and Moldova, including the development of independent states with preservation of the common economic space. Herewith the attention is paid to Russia’s vision of the CIS as a reformed Soviet Union with with centralized economic, political, military, and information spaces. The activity of Ukraine and Moldova in the CIS is analyzed. Emphasized is the fact that both states considered the CIS primarily as a common economic space, while not wishing to participate in other initiatives offered by Russia within the framework of the Commonwealth. Among such initiatives are the unification of the military potentials of the member states, the protection of the so-called the «external borders» of the CIS, the creation of a single information space, etc. At the same time, it was pointed out at the CIS initiatives in which Ukraine and Moldova participated. For example, it is the formation of the Eurasian Coal and Metal Association. It is indicated that recently weakening of relations between Ukraine and Moldova from the CIS is obvious. Conclusion – cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova within the framework of the CIS is less effective than the bilateral cooperation between above-mentioned countries. It is certain that by 2017 CIS reached the end of its potential as an institution of cooperation of the former Soviet republics.
