Patients with stable coronary artery disease and percutaneous coronary angioplasty: quality of life measured by Seattle Angina Questionnaire in a one-year observation

Abstract

[b]Introduction and objective.[/b] In recent years, much attention has been paid to the quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life in patients with coronary heart disease after percutaneous coronary angioplasty (PCI) using the SAQ questionnaire in long-term follow-up. [b]Material and Methods. [/b]The study included 275 consecutive patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease scheduled for PCI. Physical and emotional consequences of the disease was assessed using the SAQ questionnaire. Initial assessment was made the day before or on the day of the angioplasty. The final assessment was made 12 months after the date of index procedure. [b]Results[/b]. For the subscale of the SAQ questionnaire on physical limitations, the results of the initial as well as final examinations did not differ. Average values the SAQ subscales on the severity and frequency of angina, treatment satisfaction and overall quality of life showed a significant improvement on the quality of life in the whole group 12 months after the index procedure. [b]Conclusions.[/b] 1. In the studied group of patients, angioplasty had no significant impact on physical constraints that occur when performing activities requiring strenuous physical exertion. 2. Angioplasty procedure improved angina stability, angina frequency, treatment satisfaction and overall quality of life.[b]Key words[/b]: coronary artery disease, coronary angioplasty, quality of life, SAQ
