POTELYCH COLLECTION OF CERAMICS FROM THE MUSEUM OF SHEVCHENKO SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY
Journal Title: Матеріали і дослідження з археології Прикарпаття і Волині - Year 2017, Vol 21, Issue
Abstract
Issues of localization and ancient history of the region Telych (Potelych) are analyzed at the article. Telych was mentioned at the first time at the Halychyna-Volhynian chronicle in 1262. However, its localization remains questionable during a long time and was associated with Potelych in the Ukrainian part of Roztochia or with Tylicz in Polish Carpathians. All previously carried out studies of its localization were based only on written and cartographic sources and critical analysis of literature. It is important to add to this discussion unpublished archaeological sources, including collection of ceramics found in the late 1930-th on the hill-fort in Potelych. Among this pottery complex three chronological groups are distinguished – fragments of handmade tableware from IX–X centuries, fragments of tableware, made on pottery wheel from X–XI and XII–XIII centuries. Archaeological materials as it seems are finally confirmed “roztochian” instead of “сarpathian” localization of chronicle Telych (Potelych). Interestingly, that at this complex materials are presented not only synchronous with first mention of Telych (XIII century), but also significantly older. Population of the hill-fort during such a long period could evidence that this place was very favorable for living and protection through optimal natural environment and strategic location. Among these circumstances in particular are presence of close water sources, combination of high relief and defensive ramparts and moats, location of this place near passage through Roztochia hills near the shortest path from Belz and Cherven lands in Upper Bug region to the Sub-Carpathians, control of the one of the important routes of Halychyna and Volhynia lands and others.
