Prevalence of Complications in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder resulting from defect of insulin secretion and /or insulin action which results in hyperglycemia. The incidence of diabetes mellitus has increased in recent decades predominantly because of changes in the life style, an increase in prevalence of obesity and longevity. Diabetes currently affects more than 62 million Indians, which is more than 7.1% of the adult population. 1 The average age on onset is 42.5 years.2 Nearly 1 million Indians die due to diabetes every year.2
