Professor Tadeusz Szczęsny Owiński (1904–1995) – Pioneer and the Creator of Postwar Wroclaw’s Academic Dentistry

Abstract
Professor Tadeusz Szczęsny Owiński (1904–1995) is the pioneer and the creator of the Wroclaw’s academic dentistry and Wroclaw’s school of dental and maxillo-facial surgery. Graduate from Faculty of Medicine University’s of Jan Kazimierz in Lwov, follower and cooperator of prof. dr med. Antoni Cieszyński – the most famous Polish dentist. In Wroclaw, he continued and constructively developed traditions of lwov’s school of his Master. He came to Wroclaw on 9 May 1945 with pioneers of the Culture-Scientific Group under direction of prof. dr med. Stanisław Leon Kulczyński – a delegate of Health and Education Ministry. His merit was taking care of the left German Dentist’s Institute possessions as well as controlling of the building works during its renovation and organization of university clinic and the dentist’s studies. He also started-up on 23 July 1945 the dentist’s out-patients department. In years 1947–1949 as well as in 1962–1969, he was Head of Dentistry Section of the Faculty of Medicine, and in 1960–1962 he performed the function of dean of this Faculty. He directed the Department of Dental Surgery till 1969. Professor Owiński developed the operating methods in maxillo-facial surgery, his own method ostectomia mediana as well as the method the of two-stage operation of jaws bone cysts. Professor’s results of investigations have large meaning concerning jonophoresis, postoperative prosthetic rehabilitation of lower jaw, significance of apical pressure signs in the examination of the oral cavity and teeth, treatment of neuralgia of trigeminal nerve, processes of healing the bone fractures as well as the maxillo-facial oncology. 102 scientific publications, 16 doctorial theses promotion and 4 habilitation theses patronage belong to the scientific achievements of professor Owiński.
