Psychological aspects of cardiological diseases

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Cardiovascular diseases constitute the number one cause of deaths globally. They significantly affect high–income countries, despite effective treatment and prevention programmes. However, cardiovascular mortality rates have in fact increased at a fast rate in low- and middle – income countries. It is estimated that annually about 100,000 people suffer from myocardial infarction in Poland. This paper aims to discuss some of the key psychological issues pertinent to cardiac conditions and their prevention, as well as research on coping with stress and type A behaviour pattern amongst cardiac patients. Current state of knowledge. Both psychological stress and type A behaviour pattern have been implicated in the onset and progression of many cardiovascular diseases. Recent research has highlighted its importance as independent risk factor for problems of cardiac patients – undergoing both invasive and non–invasive treatment, in-hospital and after discharge. Conclusions. Psychological stress and type A behaviour pattern are associated with cardiovascular diseases. Awareness of these associations is essential in cardiovascular diseases prevention and treatment.
