Psychological aspects of sharing knowledge at a workplace based on example of a group of nurses from Warsaw hospitals

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2010, Vol 16, Issue 2

Abstract

The objective of the study was the recognition of psychological conditioning of sharing occupational knowledge in a selected group of nurses. Three variables were examined: strength of the tendency to share knowledge, intelligence and personality. Analogies test was applied for the investigation of intelligence, whereas personality was examined by the test investigating so-called Big Five Dimensions of Personality. A specially constructed questionnaire was used for examining the tendency to share knowledge. The study covered 30 scrub nurses and 30 nurse anesthetists from Warsaw hospitals. Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient was calculated to evaluate the relationship between the traits examined. For the fractions of replies to individual items of the questionnaire obtained 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The mean values of the traits were examined by the T-Test procedure. The statistical analysis of the above-mentioned variables showed statistically significant correlations: neuroticism, extraversion, openness to sharing knowledge. In the two groups of nurses examined, a statistically significant correlation was observed only in nurse anesthetists, who identify themselves with their work. The participation of people in the process of the dissemination of knowledge may lead to the development of new structures, and current competition on the labor market, imposing a constant qualifications improvement to become more competitive and attractive for the employer, may be the element inclining people for the participation in the process of knowledge sharing and management.
