Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Nocturnal enuresis (NE), commonly called bedwetting, is involuntary urination while asleep occurring in children who have completed toilet training or are over 5 years old. The prevalence of bedwetting decreases with age. Nocturnal enuresis gives rise to a major inconvenience for the whole family. The aim of study was to assess the life quality of children affected with nocturnal enuresis and their families. Extended anamnesis was performed. Specific data were collected via a survey.Material and methods. There were 95 children included: 40 girls and 55 boys, aged 5–17. Analysis of age, gender and mental condition was conducted in patients with different kinds of NE. The impact of the condition on children›s socialisation, their behaviour and family problems was estimated.Results. NE is the most common between the ages of 5–10. Monosymptomatic NE was the predominant condition. In 58.9%, emotional liability was diagnosed, 40% was under 10 years old. Despite the fact that in 85.3% cases disturbances in family functioning were observed, most of the children were properly socialized.Conclusions. 1/ NE is more common in boys, regardless of age. 2/ NE impairs emotional stability of children. 3/ NE influences family functioning. It could help to strengthen family bonds, but more often NE is the reason for lack of sleep, chronic fatigue and resignation.Key words: nocturnal enuresis, psychological aspects, children, teenagers
