Resilience Assessment: Scale for Children and Adolescent

Journal Title: International Journal of Management Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 10

Abstract

Within the International Resilience Research Project framework, a scale oriented to evaluate resilience was developed (Grotberg, 2001). This study searches for validity evidence of that scale in Portuguese children and adolescents. Data was collected in 16 schools, 8 in the North (NR) and 8 in the Lisbon Region (LR) of Portugal. 1181 young people responded to the questionnaires, 51.5% were female, ages ranged between 8 and 17 years and the average age of girls is 9.8 years (SD = 1.32) and of boys is 10.0 (SD = 1.53). 2.6% of young people had special educational needs, and 3% did not use the Portuguese language at home. 12,2% had been retained a grade. The results show that the scale demonstrated reliability, convergent and discriminant validity. The scale was cross-validated and results show invariance of the parameters. Criterionrelated validity was established through the scale’s relation with Optimism(Dawson, M. & Pooley, 2013; Utsey, Hook, Fisher & Belvet, 2008). A validated resilience measure is an important contribution for both research and the measure of resilience for the promotion of interventions in children and adolescents.
