Role of general practitioners in promoting and monitoring of hormone eplacement therapy (HRT) among climacteric women in Lublin Voivodeship in 2006–2007

Abstract
The study presents the results of research on the practical health care implementation for climacteric women by general practitioners in Lublin Voivodeship.The aim of this study was to assess the use of hormone replacement therapy among climacteric women by general practitioners in Lublin Voivodeship.Data were obtained from general practitioners who completed a questionnaire about, inter alia, ways of medical practices during the perimenopausal period and the role of general practitioners in the provision of health care for climacteric women. They were also asked about knowledge concerning indications and contraindications to hormone replacement therapy and the reasons for deciding on its use. A questionnaire designed by the authors was used in the epidemiological study. Research was conducted in 2006–2007 in the Department of Internal Diseases at the Medical University in Lublin. The study involved 45 general practitioners working in primary health care in Lublin Voivodeship.Based on own study, it was confirmed that general practitioners’ interest in the perimenopausal symptoms diagnostics and hormone replacement therapy monitoring is insufficient. Currently, a general practitioner in Lublin Voivodeship is the weakest link in the health care system when dealing with the diagnostics of the perimenopausal period and monitoring hormone replacement therapy. This situation results from the range of specialized training and competences conferred on a general practitioner by the National Health Fund.The presented results may be used in the health care system reorganization and directly at the level of medical practice. Improving health care for women during menopause by general practitioners requires the organization of additional training and updating of knowledge in this area.Key wordsclimacteric women, general practitioners, treatment
