Root resorption after orthodontic treatment; the dental width to length ratio

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2011, Vol 7, Issue 4

Abstract

In permanent teeth resorption described as the loss of root structure occurs considerably more often among mechanically shifted roots, than among roots in subjects who have not been treated orthodontically. Orthodontically induced external root resorption developes under pressure of orthodontic forces. Aim: to evaluate the incidence and severity of root resorption in maxillary and mandibular incisors after orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Material and methods: pantomographs of 60 patients before and after treatment were available for study. Presence or absence of root resorption was evaluated in all 8 incisors for each studied individual. With assumption that crown width was stable, a ratio crown width to root length was introduced, and measurements were taken in pixels on computer’s monitor. Results: it was found that only 10.83% of incisors’ roots were affected by resorption after orthodontic treatment. As a result of root shortening the width to length ratio increased. The severity of resorption was mild in comparison with findings of other authors, and was not a risk of tooth lost after orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: a possibility that mild degree of root resorption in studied group resulted from careful application forces with light wires can not be excluded. It is also possible that pantomographs are not the best records for studying root resorption so precisely as cone-beam tomography of high resolution. (Orthod. Forum 2011; 7: 185 -91).
