SECURITY AND ACCESS TO EDUCATION IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN

Abstract

Education is a key matter when we consider issues such as safety and socialdevelopment. The Afghan educational system has been totally ruined by ideology, religion,government, regional leaders and gangs. The first part of the article presents a shorthistory of Afghanistan: from the April Revolution to parliamentary elections in 2010. Thesecond part describes a slow destruction of the educational system: the Soviet andMujahideen activity, Taliban policy, violence, types of, and statistical analysis of, thevarious attacks on education. In the third part of the article the author presentsinternational struggles in order to help Afghanistan in its social development throughsupporting a broader access to education as well as improvement of teaching quality; thenumber of state and private schools as well as students; literacy rate in particularprovinces, the number of women working as teachers and the national educational strategy.Afghanistan needs new schools, professionally trained teachers and international helpin rebuilding the educational system. This issue is of not only of upmost importance in thereconstruction, development, and the economic growth of this country, but above all for itssafety.
