Solitary bone cyst of the jaws – study of two cases and review of literature

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1

Abstract

Solitary bone cyst (SBC) is a benign osseous lesion comprising 1 - 2% of all the cysts affecting the jaws. It is usually asymptomatic, slow growing, nonexpansive lesion commonly diagnosed incidentally during routine radiographic examination of the jaw bones. Its etiology is not clear and trauma has not been definitely determined to be the cause. It occurs mainly in children and young adults, and the body of the mandible is the most common site. No gender predilection has been determined. On the basis of the literature available, opinions concerning the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of this disorder have been presented. 2 cases of incidentally diagnosed solitary bone cysts of the mandible were demonstrated: in a 19 years old female and a 16 years old male. The clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of the cysts were demonstrated.
